The cheapest single fare we track this summer is £213 for a four-night sailing on Jewel of the Seas out of Fort Lauderdale. The best value per night is better still: £315 for a full week on Navigator of the Seas from Los Angeles, which works out at £45 a night. Both are cruise-only fares, and both sail from the US, which is the catch we will come back to.

Why value per night beats the "from £" headline

Sort any list of summer cruises by the headline fare and the short breaks always win, because a four-night sailing will nearly always cost less in total than a week. That does not make it better value.

Look at the top two rows again. The £213 Jewel of the Seas break is the lowest total price, but at £53 a night it is not the cheapest way to spend a night at sea. The £315 Navigator of the Seas week costs more up front and yet comes in at £45 a night, because you are spreading the fare across seven nights instead of four. If your goal is the most holiday for your money, the week is the better deal even though it has the bigger number.

These are fly-cruises, not Southampton sailings

Here is the thing the deal pages blur. Royal Caribbean does sail from Southampton in summer, and you will see plenty of "from Southampton" fares advertised. But the Royal Caribbean inventory we currently track is entirely US, Caribbean and Mediterranean departures. There are no Southampton sailings in the fares above, so every one of them is a fly-cruise for a UK traveller.

That matters for the total cost. A £213 or £315 fare is the cruise on its own. To actually take it you need return flights to Florida or California, and long-haul fares in peak summer are not small. A genuinely cheap-looking cruise-only price can become a mid-priced holiday once the flights go in, and the ranking can shuffle depending on which airport you fly from and how early you book.

So use these fares the honest way. They are excellent for comparing Royal Caribbean sailings against each other, which ship, which port, which week.
